The film is also remarkable in its own right, with great direction, cinematography, a brilliant score by Aaron Copland (nominated for an Academy Award for Best Score in 1939), and great performances by Burgess Meredith as George Milton, Lon Chaney, Jr. There are many aspects of the play that are faithfully transferred to the screen – Steinbeck’s understanding and sympathy for the migrant workers’ plight, society’s callous treatment of the elderly, and discrimination against Blacks. ![]() John Steinbeck is unquestionably one of America’s most important authors and this film adaptation, superbly directed by Lewis Milestone, is regarded as the best of the three-film adaptation of his most famous play. ![]()

The Other Side of the Story - book review ![]() ![]() ![]() I am Australian, and I have never been to America, and I can tell if you are writing a book about this place and you have not actually been there yourself. ![]() Things do not ring true if someone is writing about a place they are not familiar with. There are impossible uses of geography, because the writer does not know how long it takes to drive between, say, Portland and Seattle, because she lives in England. The characters use phrases that are not used in America, because the author is familiar with how people speak in England. I do not want to use Fifty Shades of Grey as an example, but it is such an obvious example that I feel it will illustrate my point quite well: it is set in America (I imagine because Twilight is set in America), but the author is English. You can tell when a novel is set in a country that the writer is not particularly familiar with. Things I wish non-American writers would stop doing: set novels vaguely in America for no apparent reason, and get all of the details wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Don Nicolás realized that I was recording and began to tell the story in Tepehua. Oh yeah! Spoiler! Ursula still has Triton in her slimy grasp as well. Conversely Ariel is Queen of the Sea, ruling Atlantica in her father’s absence. In this twisted tale Ursula succeeded in tricking Eric into marrying Vanessa she now rules the Kingdom, with Eric remaining under Ursula’s spell and pretty much clueless to his wife’s evil tendencies. Part of Your World is based five years after Ursula defeats Ariel, yes you heard me right! The whole miraculous, shiny magic being released from the shell, the little mermaid regaining her voice, the whole harpoon, giant octopus, child scarring scene…never happened! Therefore, it only seemed right that it was my first review. I LOVE the twisted tales’ series of books but so far, I think Part of Your World may be my favourite. ![]() |
